Every spring I start getting calls that follow the same pattern: someone’s heard about Riverfest, or they’ve got a fishing trip to Weiss Lake lined up, and they want to know if they can just park an RV close by instead of commuting 45 minutes each way. My honest answer is always the same — yes, and here’s exactly how to make it work. After years of delivering rigs all over the Etowah County area and beyond, I’ve learned which events are genuinely worth building a long weekend around in an RV, and more importantly, where to put the rig so you’re actually close to the action.
Riverfest on the Coosa — Plan to Book Early
Riverfest is the one event where I consistently have to turn people away if they wait too long. It draws a big crowd to downtown Gadsden along the Coosa River, and the people who have the most fun are the ones who aren’t trying to fight traffic in and out every day. The closest campground I recommend here is Coosa River RV Resort — it puts you within a short drive of the festival footprint, and the sites there are long enough to comfortably fit a larger travel trailer. When I deliver to Coosa River RV Resort, I take the approach from Rainbow City side, which keeps me off the tighter downtown streets. If you’re driving yourself in, that’s worth knowing too. For Riverfest, I’d suggest booking your RV rental at least three to four weeks out — spots fill fast and I can’t always accommodate last-minute requests during peak festival weekends.
Weiss Lake Fishing Tournaments (Cherokee County)
Weiss Lake over in Cherokee County runs bass tournaments throughout spring and fall — exactly the shoulder seasons when the weather around here is as good as it gets, usually late March through May and again in October. This is the event type I get the most repeat customers from. Anglers figure out quickly that waking up 200 yards from the boat ramp instead of driving from a hotel in Centre or Gadsden is a completely different experience. The Cherokee County campgrounds along Weiss Lake vary in site length, so I always ask customers how many people are coming and whether they need to tow a boat. That determines which trailer size makes sense — a longer fifth wheel gives you the space, but some of the tighter loops at lakeside sites work better with a mid-size trailer. Fall Color Season on Lookout Mountain Parkway and at DeSoto State Park
October in northeast Alabama doesn’t get enough credit. The drive up Lookout Mountain Parkway toward Fort Payne is genuinely stunning once the hardwoods turn, and I’ve had customers rent just to do that loop without any specific event on the calendar. But if you time it with the Fort Payne area’s fall festivals or the Little River Canyon rim drives when the foliage peaks — usually mid-to-late October — you have a real trip on your hands. I regularly deliver to DeSoto State Park Campground near Fort Payne, and that’s one of my favorite drop-offs because the setting up on the plateau is just beautiful that time of year. Fair warning: the entrance road into DeSoto has a couple of turns that make me take it slow in anything over about 32 feet. I always do a walk of the site before I unhitch. Noccalula Falls Events and the Campground Right on Site
Noccalula Falls Park in Gadsden runs seasonal events — holiday light shows, family weekends, and special programming through the year — and what most people don’t realize until I tell them is that there’s an actual campground on the park property. Noccalula Falls Campground means you’re literally camping inside the park. I’ve done deliveries there and set up rigs where families could walk to the falls before breakfast. For events at the park itself, this is the obvious choice. The sites are well-maintained but not enormous, so I typically match customers here with a smaller to mid-size trailer rather than the biggest units in the fleet. Check the park’s own calendar before you book — they announce their seasonal events a few weeks in advance.
Cheaha State Park — Alabama’s Highest Point, Any Weekend Worth Going
Cheaha doesn’t always tie to a specific event, but it deserves its own mention because the Cheaha State Park Campground books out fast on spring and fall weekends — especially when hiking groups, mountain biking events, or photography workshops happen to land at the same time as peak foliage or wildflower season. I’ve delivered up to Cheaha and the road to get there is beautiful but it asks something of you. The grades coming up off Highway 281 are real — nothing dangerous in a properly loaded rental trailer, but you want to know it’s coming. I always mention that on the pre-delivery call so customers aren’t surprised. September and October are the months I’d plan that trip; summer at Cheaha is hot and the sites are exposed.
